The families gathered for this picture included the Rosenthals (back row), Marcuses (middle, seated) and Eisenbergs (front). Harry Brand is standing with his foot on the chair. German Jews arrived in Minneapolis in the 1860s, followed by a large influx of Eastern European Jews in the 1880s. The South Side neighborhood around Franklin and 15th Avenues was home to Romanians and Russians.

The first location (1887-1890) of St. Mary's Hospital. Previously operated by the Sisters of Mercy, the hospital was in the former Murphy mansion, 2416 South Sixth Street. A new hospital, with later additions, was built at Riverside and 24th. The Sisters of St. Joseph owned and operated the hospital until 1991 when it was sold to the Fairview Health System.

It was leased by Edward Neill for $1,200 per year to house the Baldwin School, the preparatory school Neill founded. Owner Charles Macalester, namesake of Macalester College, deeded the building to school Trustees.
