The Flaaten family came to Duluth in 1890 from Norway. Five brothers: Gustav violin, conducting, composition 1876-1929, Jens 1869-1922, Alphin cellist 1888-1953, Roy conductor and Henry were singers, musicians, composers, and music teachers of the Flaaten Conservatory of Music the Normanna Chorus and the Orpheus Singing Society.

Andrew Slade is the author of White Woods, Quiet Trails (Ridgeline Press), the ultimate guidebook for enjoying cross country skiing, snowshoeing and winter hiking, plus many other winter activities and attractions, along Minnesota's North Shore. Jay Steinke, a Duluth photographer, has put together two photography books: Gunflint Territory (tea table books), images from the Boundary Waters near the Gunflint Trail, and Superior's North Shore-Wild Places. Both Andrew and Jay are interviewed in Duluth's Lester Park by author Richard "Fred" Arey.

This program is from a concert in Duluth on June 1, 1925, at the Armory, by the Norwegian Students' America Chorus from the Royal Frederick University of Oslo, Norway. The program includes greetings from Duluth's Mayor Samuel F. Snively, photographs of the chorus and of the Normanna Male Chorus of Duluth, a brief history of Duluth, information on the Duluth-Superior Harbor, photographs of some Duluth landmarks and of the Duluth homes of some Norwegian-Americans, and many interesting ads from local businesses.
