Visit Highway Exhibit While At State Fair
We Knew It All The Time
Something all of us in the department knew all the time was
brought to the attention of all
members of State Employees, Inc.,
at the annual picnic of that organization.
We knew all the time that the
prettiest girls in state employment
are working for us. And the
judges at the annual bathing
beauty contest at the picnic agreed.
They picked two of the Highway
candidates for FIRST AND SECOND. Mickey Kunzman, tab
room operator, is shown here with
the bouquet of American Beauty
roses given her for winning. In
the center, Barbara Lobstein was
awarded second place. Roberta

place winner.
The third candidate offered by the
Highway department was Rita Doffing, Drivers License,
who lost out in the early eliminations. This is the second year that
the department had a winner, with
Barbara Hutton, now in Drivers
License, winning a third award
last year.
Deadline For Special Plates
Mrs. Mike Holm, secretary of
state, has ruled that Sept. 1, 1953,
is the absolute deadline for special
license plates for next year. No
applications for special numbers
will be accepted after that date.

The ninety-ninth birthday of the oldest continuing institution in
Minnesota will be noted on August 29 when the 92nd annual Minnesota
State Fair opens its ten day run, ending on Labor Day, Sept. 7.
Along with the thousands of varied activities and exhibits will
again be the splendid exhibit of the Minnesota Department of Highways. It will occupy its usual spot, the northeast corner of the State
Exhibit Building, just across the fence from the Central Shop on
Snelling Ave.
A feature of the 1953 exhibit is
a large relief map of Minnesota on
which is shown the location of the
control and repeaters stations of
the new radio network being completed for the Highway Patrol.
This map, mounted on a tilted
table, uses miniature radio towers
to show how the radio system
operates. Each tower has a little
light at its top, colored according
to type.
Blood Is Stockpiled
Sure, you've got blood, it runs
out when you cut yourself. But
have you ever found yourself
without enough of life's fluid? At
some time that may happen to
you and you may need blood for
transfusions.
To provide for such emergencies, the Hiwayan Club has had a
stock pile of blood in the St. Paul
Blood Bank and the Minneapolis
War Memorial Blood Bank, Inc.
This plan of having blood available when needed, to be replaced
soon after, has been operated by
the Hiwayan Club for a number
of years. Requests for blood are
made through the club secretary
and usually the member who asks
for it makes arrangements to have
the blood replaced.
No regular calls for donors are
made as the club maintains a level
of "credit" of the number of pints
thought to be sufficient for emergencies among department employees. So when blood is withdrawn from the banks, the call for
donors goes out for replacement
blood.
It's a most satisfying experience,
to give so cheaply and easily
something that money cannot buy
or manufacture.
a complicated control
panel, containing 24 individual switches,
the officer describing the
operation can
trace an emergency call from
the time one is
received at the
Central Office
station through
the radio system to an emergency
car and return. He can demonstrate how the radio system will
integrate all stations and cars with
other enforcement agencies, including the Minnesota warden service of the conservation department.
Behind the map, forming a
background for the introduction of
the radio system, will be a panorama of pictures showing the many
services Minnesota Highway Patrolmen render the travelling
public.
Recruiting Experiment
Recognizing the terrific necessity of recruiting qualified personnel for work in the department, the
Personnel Section of the Administration Division is setting up a
booth under a large sign which
reads "Information on state highway employment." Manned by recruiting experts from the Civil
Service Department, fair visitors
will be able to get latest information on available jobs with the department, how to register for examinations and the opportunity to
apply for civil service examinations
in all job classifications.
The Safety Theatre will again be
