The rookies have finally made their
appearance. Some seem to be very disi -
ppointed wile others aver very mi ch over
joyed. But give the boyr a chance, i
still ha e a lot tc see and experience.
The total strength to elate of new
men that have entered Snelling is about
600, of course this figure will be increased b the end of this week, with more men
coming from the Northern part of bhe
State. *
It is expected that Y tbe end of
next v some 1500 new men will 'be enroll
ed in the 'w. later the-'- wi1! e rent
to Compa ies i the Northern part of 1
State for Forest Hrrvice Projects.
The row men will stay here in Fort
Snellin a wee' or so before taking off
to the wools, though many of the fellows
seem to thinl the--'re going ro stav here
a few months.
How that the Companies have heen or
:ized and the boys seem to have settled
themselves down many are beginning to thini
and wonder where they are going, and the
same old answer p.oes " Just wait and see"
"re's tomorrow yet —.

In the meantime some ob J:be rookies
were placed on Special duty by some Sgt.,

EE
3h as ' rc hate to admit it the
Lesota weather last Monday tried to
become rs much like ] ansas as v/as possible in tbe short period of one day.
As wclall bnev, Kansas has been having
h- r troubles with Sand storms, pushed al-
:'rst moving wind. A powerful
wind, sweeping from the Northwest,
incidentally joming all the way from
Canada swooped down upon "orb Snelli
and the vicinity, bringing with it dust
and minute particles of sand from North
Dakot.
Wv.stern Minnesota. The gale
was of such velocity that the " Dust" was
forced through even the most tightly
closed v/indows rev doors. Those members
of the Company working ?n the buildings
facing the parade mounds, where the wind
had a .full sweep found their desks
covered v/ith a very fine silt, making
it quite impossible to write upon them
without first dustinf them off.
Though not particularly noticeable
when walking against the wind, one soon
found his eyes, ..nose and ears fil] ..
with the fine sand. Scvoral members of
'he Company, walki] i ■ vss the parade
adsfrom the gara c woije helped,
considerabley in their hike and cracked
wise to the effect that if they had .wings
all they would have had to do, v/as to
spread them and the wind would have done
the rest. Of course they didn't consider
the problem of alighting, nor did they
consider that the wind might cease to
blow suddenly and e.ave them suspended in
mi4-air, with disasterous results.,.
This little sand storm gave the
Pansans a chance to deride the .Minnes-ota
weather a little more than usual. They
didn't have this chance lrrv s towards
evening the wind drop}■ I with I
falling of the wind, the sand storm
disappeared, becoming only a slight indicating .zt a real sand storm might be.
