BOE-BOLKAN ATTEND
COURSE IN METHODS
—c c c—
Mr. Peter Bolkan, Camp Educational Adviser and Mr. Nordahl H.
Boe, Co-ordinator for the Caledonia
Public Schools, are attending a
course in "Conference Methods of
Teaching." The course is conducted
by Professor Baird of Iowa State
College, Ames, Iowa. It is held at
the CCC Camp at Decorah, Iowa.
The course, which meets one day
each week, is, according to Mr.
Bolkan, "a very interesting one."
It does not pay to be so busy doing so many things that you forget
what you are supposed to be doing.

Well, we're glad he liked our
front page. We hope he likes
this one. We're sorry he didn't
like our inner pages last time.
We suppose he won't like 'em
this time.
Doggone it, we wish "Sam"
would take into consideration
that fact that we are of necessity limited by our budget
to a very small amount of
space. If we were to start
splashing headlines all over
the inner and back pages of
this paper, chances are we
wouldn't have enough room
for anywhere near all our
copy.
We could, in other words,
make "The Flash" a very interesting spectacle indeed —
but we would have to do it at
the expense of valuable news
coverage. We always figured
that the purpose back of our
paper was to give news to our
readers.
NATIONAL DEFENSE COURSE
IN WELDING ORGANIZED
NEW WELDING SHOP
IS BEING CONSTRUCTED
—c c c—
Construction of a new portable
building to be used as a welding
shop is underway at Company 1720.
The new building, 30x31 will have a
concrete floor. It will, when completed, greatly enhance the facilities for the Specific 4B National Defense Training Courses in Oxy-
acteylene and Electric Arc Welding
now held in the SCS garage.
When the new building is completed all eight of the camps welding units will be installed in it.
Welding booths will be installed for
the Electric Arc Units.
The construction of the new
building is under the supervision of
Michael Simon. Camp Blacksmith.
"Mike" has had several enrollees
under him for several days and already the building begins to take
shape. Mr. Kesler, Camp Superintendent, and various other members
of the technical staff have spent as
much time as possible in supervising the work
When the new building is completed, both the camp's National
Defense Training Courses, Radio
and Welding, will be separately
housed.
NEW COMMANDER
GIVES PROGRAM
At a company meeting held in the
Recreation hall, April 8th Capt. A.
E. Johnson, new Commanding officer of Company 1720, delivered a
short address to the enrollees of the
company. He outlined the program
he intends to follow while he is in
command of the company.
The theme of the whole regime
will be, according to Captain Johnson, co-operation. "You play ball
with me and I'll play ball with you,"
he said.
Captain Johnson remarked that—
"It is assumed that all of you enrollees are gentlemen. Normally all
officers are gentlemen. Courtesy between such persons is only natural.
The usual customs of courtesy—the
use of the word 'sir' when addressing
an officer and the practice of coming to attention in the presence of an
officer will be carried out in the
company."
During the address Captain Johnson took up the suggestions for improvement set down by Captain
Reed, Iowa District Inspector, after
his last visit to the company. He
outlined methods of correcting all
deficiencies. He illustrated new
methods of making beds and of
hanging clothes in the barracks.
"It will take a lot of effort on the
part of all of us," he said. "Captain
Reed has given us enough to do to
last all summer, but, if we all pitch
in and do our best, we can make
this a really good company.
In closing Captain Johnson stated
that he would hold what he called a
"ball game" each Monday evening.
In other words that a weekly company meeting, to which officers and
men alike could bring suggestions j
and complaints, would be held.
MR. HAROLD CHAFFEY
VISITS COMPANY 1720
—ccc—
Mr. Harold G. Chaffey visited
Company 1720 early in the month.
Mr. Chaffey is one of the ten personal investigators for Mr. McBi-
tee, CCC Director.
Mr. Chaffey was greatly impressed by the radio facilities of the
Company. He assured Mr. Bolkan,
Camp Educational Adviser, that as
long as the national defense program was in existence the radio
classes would continue to function.

A Specific 4B National Defensa
Training Course in Oxy-acetylene
and Electric Arc Welding has been
added to Company 1720's Educational program. The course is sponsored by the Minnesota Department of
Education for Vocational Training in
conjunction with the Caledonia
Board of Education.
A course in Oxy-acetylene Welding has been conducted in the camp
for the past several months. This
course was sponsored by the camp
itself, and because of limited facilities could not offer the excellent opportunities that the new course offers.
The new National Defense Course
is limited to ten especially selected
enrollees, who have the aptitude for
and the willingness to learn welding. Each man enrolled in the course
receives 17 hours weekly instruction from Mr. W. L. Hess, local
welder employed by the Caledonia
Auto Service Company.
The facilities at the camp for the
course are very good. Two new
electric arc welders, three gas welders, and numerous other equipment
have been purchased and installed in
the SCS garage, where the course
is now conducted. The camp was already in possession of two gas welders, making a total of seven complete
units available. A new portable
building is being erected which will,
when completed, be used to house
the welding course.
The welding course is the second
Specific National Defense Training
course to be offered at Company
1720 under the State Department of
Education for Vocational Training.
First to be offered was the course in
radio which has been so well received by enrollees and residents of
Caledonia alike.
Mr. John H. Longstreet. Superintendent of the Caledonia Public
Schools has been named Supervisor
for the courses. Mr. Nordahl H. Boe,
who has for the past several months
been the camp's radio instructor is
Co-ordinator.

recently. Mr. Gordon was especially
impressed with the Camp's two §pe-
cific National Defense Training
Courses in Radio and Welding.
