DULUTH   5,   MINNESOTA  July 4 and what a gladness I have  no dates for the day — refused two invitations to go,  by traffic-infested roads, out of town, and shall read  difficult detective stories, and takesmallwalk, and talk  with Mrs. Povah about the virtues of Lucky, a cat of the  highest gifts in boxing, tall-chasing, looking through  holes at you, pattawawa, and Just looking beautiful.  Your grand recent letter indicates that you have started  off new Job with a bang. I'm extremely glad. Write me  as much of it as you can.  The Just-issued edict that now reservations on trains  can be made only 5 days before going raises hell with  my desire to have return«to-Duluth ticket before I leave  here. But as I have ticket and Pullman — even with  bedrooms — through from here to NY, leaving July 25 and  arriving NY. July 27 as planned, I shall Just go anyway  and, when I get ready to come back here, have Random  House fuss and get back here when I can. You must, tho,  be prepared to have a wan and melancholy exile — me —  hanging about on 54th Street for days and days and days and  days and days and days and — but you get the idea HM —  days after you had expected to get rid of him, that you  might plunge into space rates, articles ordered in advance, and the other sweets of the life literary.  Week end with Rafes, August 4-5 instead of July EBB  28-9 — fine.' Our first week-end together, maybe we  can take a train just a little way into Connecticut,  and go sit on a beach.
