IS*5* SINCLAIR LEWIS 2601 EAST SECOND ST. DULUTH 5, MINNESOTA Friday, July 13 My darling, my darling forever, I was filled with such sadness when I heard your voice last evening, so small and meek and neurltistic, and the sadder that I shall not be seeing you in two weeks. But if I did do so, I might get stuck in Mew York for even a couple weeks after 1 wanted to leave, and you would be so sick of my, ""No, I didn't get a ticket today, but I'm very hopeful — I hear where a fat woman for Fitzamashwa, Ioway, may give up her reservation to* morrow.w _o u As it is, instead of staying here till into October, then, I'll come to New Yorklabout mid-September, hoping that we shall have our week on Cape Cod, and probly stay on in NY all or almost all winter, if I can find a flat, say in Greenwich Vge. Pat the Pretty Cat — its final and irrevocable name — is lying on my bed, coming in now and then to say, ""Wrltin1 to Aunt Marcella? Tell her to tell mi Mrspowere"" — that's how Pat insists it is spelled — ""that I miss her like the ddvil."" Pat does, too; she constantly goes to Mrs, Povah's room, looking for her/ When your mother left here yesterday, she was excited and gay about seeing you, but I don't think she missed one other single thing in the East, not even her old friends. She loves the spaciousness of this place and th« quiet and the lake and trees and Pat, and couunting for something in a big establishment. Don't discourage her but decidedly encourage her if she should want to come back here for something of a stay when I go East. I tfcink it's given her a new life, hugely though she does miss you. My lecture Journey to Moorhead and Bemidjl — come come now; c seats of which counties? — was a success and I liked the miles of forest on the way and teachers and kids when I got there. Only two more talks here, and two more Esquire pieces, and I am a free man, except ——- J. Wentworth Mouse 1
