QP  Seeing him, not passing in an alcoholized salon of  logrollere but really at work, he was wonderfuls keen,  persistent, Informed, easy, pleasant. For our sins  we had to sit thru three hours of a dinner party at  the Salsiches; Margaret was drunk and a monster of  ~  .   ' babbling inapposlteness; but John was so amiable through  +     £ it all that I admired him all over again. AND, talking  J^    q to people who really had something — Judge Nolan and  ,1        m   a the radical lawyer, Henry Paull a~. John was a marvel of  •i     J. perception, memory, efficiency. By God, the book will  A     S have something, and you can forget the Importance of  v)       J     \ details in light of the way John wants to know about  d( every  state, ""What or who is the power behind the state  government and business?""  The stamps enclosed I found in an old case where they  must have been for maybe eight years.  You can use them  either for collections or for postage.   J  S   * hugely loved your Peggie Powers letter.^ It was some-  tf     -/ x       how so touching and beautiful, as well as fun. You  (J       t— (   are 3till all of that surprised (yet slightly suspi-  i      clous) and adventurous child, along with being the  efficient Our Miss Powers.  I treasure it with the  j  (n 1        first Peggie Powers letter that I ever received.  Two weeks from today, we start for NY. LOOKITs  No  mmmm matter how much we wander on the way, we shall be  there before the evening of Friday, Sept. 14, and I  want you to keep that evening for me....and as much of  Saturday-Sunday as possible Your mother might come in  ({  *7     on Saturday, 15th, and we'll make plans — e.g. about  how much I pay her (no idea now) along with food allowace.
