HARBOR
TRAIL NO. 1
An easy trail which is close to the shore, the trail
starts on the Sawbill Truil at either the Carlton Peak
Wildlife Management Area sign, 2 miles north of
Tofte; or at the Carlton Peak Road, 3 miles north of
Tofte. A total of 4 mile, of trail provide good views
of Carlton Peak and in excellent opportunity to
see some deer. Cars can be parked along the Saw-
bill Trail at either end cf the trail.
TRAIL NO. 2
An easy trail which fellows unplowed roads. The
trail starts at the junctioi of Forestry Road # 1 66 ana
follows that road from he Sawbill Trail, across the
Temperance River and to a short loop route. Total
ength is 6 miles with the possibility to branch off
on other unplowed roads. The starting point is on
the Sawbill Trail, 6 miles north of Tofte.
TRAIL NO. 3
Starting on the Sawbill Trail, 6V2 miles north of Tofte,
this trail begins at the'north edge of the research
fence and is 1 Vi miles bng. A very easy, short trail.
TRAIL NO. 4
An easy trail following an old logging rood. The
trail is 4 miles long anc begins on the Sawbill Trail
9 miles north of Tofte.
TRAIL NO. 5
This trail follows the Pancore Lake Road (F.R. 338).
The trails beginning is on the Sawbill Trail, 1 1 miles
north of Tofte, before you cross the Temperence
River.
TRAIL NO. 6
This is a series of four routes which connect the
Sawbill Trail, Forestry Road #170, and an old railroad grade. The entry points are:
A. Logging road, 12 miles north ot Tofte after
crossing the Temperance River bridge.
Logging road, 13 miles north of Tofte, before
you cross Plouff Creek.
Logging road, 14 miles north of Tofte, after you
cross Plouff Creek.
Intersection of Sawbill Trail and FR 170 at the
Railroad logging sign, 15 miles north of Tofte.
This series of trails totals 9 miles in length.
TRAIL NO. 7
This 4 mile trail starts just north of Mistletoe Creek
on the Caribou Trail, 6 miles north of Lutsen. It follows old logging roads in the area.
TRAIL NO. 8
This 6 mile route follows several unplowed roads,
starting 7 miles north of Lutsen on the Caribou Trail
It follows the Honeymoon Trail west and then heads
north along Christine Lake and up to the Clara Lake
Road which it follows east to the Caribou Trail.
TRAIL NO. 9
This advanced trail starts at the Chateau Leveaux
sign on Highway 61, 2Vi miles east of Tofte. The
trail is 1 Vi miles long with a vertical drop of 900
feet from the top of Leveaux Mountain to the highway, the Vi mile nearest the summit being the
steepest.
TRAIL NO. 10
This trail follows Forestry Road #304 for almost 5V:
miles in to the bridge over Kimball Creek. It is an
easy trail with rolling hills. The trail begins about 9.
miles north of Grand Marais on the Gunflint Trail.
TRAIL NO. 11
This trail is 3Vi to 4 miles in length and offers some
challenging conditions. It may be more fun to ski
this one from its beginning near Two Island Lake,
coming out near the north side of Devil Track Lake
on the Devil Track Road.
TRAIL NO. 12
Eagle Mountain Trail. Highest point in Minnesota.
The trail begins at Junction of Forestry Roads 153
and 158 and is very winding and hilly. It is 3Vi miles
to Eagle Mountain summit (Elevation 2301), monument, with a breath-taking view in every direction.
Extremely steep, winding trail as leaving lake but
levels off as trail nears summit.
TRAIL NO. 13
This trail follows Forestry Road #158 along the Cascade River for about 2Vi miles. It's a fairly easy trail
with rolling hills.
TRAIL NO. 14
This 16 mile trail overlooks many lakes and has some
steep hills on the south trail. It follows an old railroad grade north to Forestry Road #325 and then
follows that road east to its junction with the Gun-
flint Trail. The trail begins at the junction of the Pine
Mountain road, F.R. 154, and the Gunflint Trail,
County 12.
TRAIL NO. 15
This trail follows an unplowed road, FR 144, from
the Gunflint Trail in to Greenwood Lake. The trail
is 7 to 7Vi miles one way.
TRAIL NO. 16
This trail to Lima Mountain, begins at the junction
of Forestry Road #152 and the Gunflint Trail and
follows FR 152 west to the Lima Mountain trail. This
trail is recommended to very experienced skiers. It
follows the edge of some very steep cliffs, but is
very scenic.
TRAIL NO. 17
This trail is about 9 miles, one way, into the Rush
Lake area and has varied conditions.
TRAIL NO. 18
The Partridge Lake trail is 2 miles long, taking you
through some very rolling terrain.
TRAIL NO. 19
This very scenic trail is 3 miles long one way, and
reaches into South Lake, on the Canadian border.
TRAIL NO. 20
This trail starts at the junction of the Arrowhead
Trail and the unplowed Irish Creek Forestry road.
It follows the Irish Creek road for 5V4 miles over
easy trail to the first intersection where it turns
south towards Tom Lake. After a mile and a half of
trail, take the left fork, which follows the north side
of Tom Lake and returns to the Arrowhead Trail
over 6'/j to 7 miles of very hilly trail. This trail is
fairly challenging.
TRAIL NO. 21
A moderately challenging trail of about 4 miles,
beginning about 1 mile south-west of Mineral Center on old Hwy. 61.
TRAIL NO. 22
This trail begins one mile north of Mineral Center
on Old Hwy 61 and continues for SVj miles into
Swamp Lake. It is fairly level with rolling hills.
TRAIL NO. 23
This easy 3Vj mile trail follows an old logging road
to the Pigeon River. The beginning of the trail is on
old Hwy. 61 about Vi mile past the Mt. Maud turn-
off. It is .suggested that all vehicles be parked at
the Mt. Maud turnoff and not be driven beyond, as
the road is very bad. Partridge Falls, on the Pigeon
River is about Vi mile down river from where the trail
comes out. (North)
TRAIL NO. 24
The Grand Portage Trail is nearly 9 miles from Lake
Superior to the Pigeon River. Entry points are at the
Grand Portage Stockade and where the trail crosses
new Highway 61. The old Hwy 61 is NOT maintained
and the trail may NOT be reached from Mineral
Center. The trail between New Hwy 61 and Old
Hwy 61 is challenging, with many sharp turns, steep
hills, and windfalls. Caution should be exercised on
the steep downhill runs. The trail from Old 61 to the
Fort Charlotte site is fairly level. The Cascade trail
leaves the Grand Portage Trail about one mile east
of the Fort Charlotte site. The scenery is beautiful,
but skiers should use EXTREME CAUTION when
nearing the edges of the gorge.
