arrested by the di'„c.1iarge of fire
arms across the street at the corner, and all around the Scriver
Block and covering the Fi-st Na
tional Bank. Eight or ten horsemen armed to the teeth with heavy
revolvers were discharging them
in rapid succession, and our citizens flying in all directions, till
they recovered a little from cuch
an unlooked for raid.
It was soon known that the
Bank treasures wm« fcfreiv ohie#-

gang had entered the Bank and
shot Mr. Hey wood, rde;itJ, and Mr.
Bunker, through the shoulder.
He was taken to Dr. Coon's where
he will be properly cared for.
By this time our citizens began
to rally, and to return their tire.
and two of the robbers killed, and
one horse, when the raider's reception becoming so hot they
turned and fled south, dashing
through Dundas towards Millers-
burg with some of our good men
in pursuit. Two of the men which
got away are badly wounded, and
one of the horses.
Several of our citizens narrowly escaped; but considering our
unpreparedness for such an onset,
our delivjrance was remtrkable.
The saddest Q, :^-^-hi:r~*c-"as<-dy

truest men, Mr. Hey wood who fell
in the tearless, and faithful discharge of what he doubtless regarded his duty. The poor deluded miscreant shot him because he
refused on the robber's demand
to open the safe.
The robbers left empty handed,
minus two men and a horse dead,
besides the wounded.
To the stricken family of the
deceased, Mr. Heywood, we give

Address- FRANK SEWALL,
A. M., President,
51w7. TJrbana, Ohio,.
NoBTHFEffiLD, Minn., September Sth, 187G.
Our usually quiet little city was
uncommonly wakeful through the
night of Thursday, the 7th, after
the tragic events of the preceding
afternoon. Our streets are rilled
with anxious faces and open ears
to catch evory rumor from the
flying robbers anittheir&ttermiii-
ed pursuers.
First, we remark that Ooroner
Waugh arrived by the morning
train from Faribault, in the discharge of his official duties. Pursuant to law he issued the necessary orders to policeman Horner
for summoning a jury of inquest
who scon returned the following
JU3Y,
A. H. Rawsoo, S. h BnsluUll,
Robf. Silk, J. L. McFee, R. Pium-
mer. C W. Gress.
Who, after examining the cases
of the two dead'robuers, repaired
to the house of mourning, where
lie the remains of the truly noble
Heywood, who sacrificed his life
E. Hobbs, J. P. Alle , Fr
Wilcox, E. L. Fuller.
While these events are trans
idling, messengers are arriving
from various places in the direc
lion where the robbeis fled, and
telegrams have been pouring in
from various important points,
which we will give in the order of
their reception :
First, the Chicago Times, last
evening, called by telegram for
1,500 words over the wires, if so
many should be necessary to represent the facts of the raid, to
which O. S. Iluibert responded
Second, Mayor Stewart, this
morning, received a telegram that
the Minneapolis party got within
range of the fleeing robber eang,
and exchanged shots with them,
with one of the robbers' horses
killed and his rider wounded, and
the party considerably demoralized.
Third. A. 0.-;Whipple received
a telegram fr.,m Sheriff Chandler,
of Red Wing, that four of the gang
got their outfit in that city, including horses for each, the buckskin,
the splendid bay, and two others,
and four saddles and bridles they
purchased of Pet. Watson, who
formerly lived here.
Fourth, the Winona Republican
has sent for all tlie news it can get.
Fifth. Joshua Claris-, of Faribault
arrived in town at half past 11 A.
M., bringing a report he got from
Mr. Spalding, direct from Morris-
town, that a party from Faribault
had an encounter with the robbers
near that place, tlie latter getting
away witb one of them wounded.
Rumors are rife, and the excitement continues, and Will till it
shall be definitely known whether
the robber gang is captured.
Right here we remark that this
is the first instance we think of in
anv similar raid, that any of the
robber gang were killed, and
Northfield is entitled to the credit
of putting two of the raiders hors
du combat, and seriously wounding two more, besides killing a
splendid and innocent horse which
was made subservient to their vil-
lany. Let us put the horse in his
own peaceful heaven. He looked
like a thorough bred.
One of the men killed measur
ed 6 feet 3 inches, the other 5 feet
9 inches, weil built and comforta'
b:y dresse 1. They both had auburn hair, and many think they
were brothers from 24 to 28 years
old. Their hands showed no signs
that they were working men; one
had four dollars and a good watch
in his pockets; the other had a
cheaper watch but no money;-both
are to be buried to-day in potters
field, such a field, to the purchase
of which Judas' money was devoted more than 1,S00 years ago, because the money was the price of
blood. One was shot in the head,
the other in theheart. Our photographers have made good pictures of-these desperadoes for the
use of the rogues gallery, or for
sale to those who have no such
ery.
Some of the ladies who looked
upon their dead faces recognized
one as having called at their house
on the pretext of wanting something lo eat, telling tiie most
plausible story he could.
A casually occurred yesterday
which we didn't lcaru 'lill to-day.
Nicholas Grustafson, by reckless
shooting of Ihe desperadoes, was
struck on his forehead over the
eye, which was regarded at the
time as a slight injury, but the
symptoms to-day are quite serious
if not dangerous, Mr. Bunker who
was shot through the shoulder we
are Glad, to announce is doing as
well as can he expected. The ball
went clear through and wonderfully shunned every bone and artery, though a very narrow escape.
THE BANK.
Yesterday we stated on good
authoril v thai th
money from the bank. The eiii
cers of the instil uMon h tv e
'n session to-day counting ll;e
bul this may]
hereafter.
Tiie rascals di 1 grab some Scrip,
which they thrustmio a bug, and
sorro nickels which they threw
back, but in their hurry, as it wa»
getting hoi for them outside, they
lied, from ihe bank leaving the
bag. hence it was concluded thai
they got nothing. The bag they
Lsfl is a regular grain sack marked
willi the initials, "H. C. A " They
also left a linen duster. (Prob
the Bank would send these by

INTERESTING MEETING.
An interesting meeting bet ween
Colonel R. W Baylor, an ex confederate officer, and General B. F.
Kellev, of the federal army, was
recently held at the home of the
former gentleman in West Virginia. Colonel Baylor was captured
during the war by Gen. Kelley's
troops, and was tried by order oi
Secretary Stanton for an alleged
violation of tha rules of war, and
sentenced to be hanged. In looking over the papers relating to
the case, which were brought to
him for approval, General Kellev
became convinced that .tiie facts
did not justify the aciion of the
courtmariial. Therefore he dis
approved of the finding of the
court and sent the papers to the
Secretary of war. The Secretary
was not pleased with the action
of the general, and referred the
papers to another officer, who
agreed with Gen Kelley. This
did not satisfy the Secretary, and
he referred the documents to
Judge Advocate General Holt,
who said there were informalities
in the trial, and the Secretary ordered another court martial which
was had, and a similar verdict and
sentence was tlie result. General
Kelley again di-approved the find
ing, the Secretary of war again referred the papers to o! her officers,
who this time agreed with General Kelley. and the sentence was
annulled. Some time afterward
President Lincoln heard of the
case, and sent a dispatch to Gen.
Kel ey, thanking him for his action in the matter, and sa,\ ing that
he was glad to know that an officer of his amy had the courage
to do right in spite of the opposition of court martial and his superior officers. By the chances of
war General Kelley was afterward captured by the confederates, and, although in no such
perilous posiiion as was Colonel
Baylor, he received every kindness and attention that it was in
I lie power of that officer 'o give.
They have not seen each i
since the war, until General Kel
ley and his wife accepted an invi
tation from Colonel Baylor to vis
it him in his West Virginia B

oost on Sunday last.
The Philadelp! h papers give af
full account of a most brutal prize'
light which took place on the
mm niiig of the 31st i.lt., at Penns-
viilo. New Jersey. A letter lo
ihe Balle. Gazelle says about ten*
tug boa's full uf rough and sporting characters went down the river !o witness the fight. The contest lasted two hours and seven
minutes, ninety six rounds being
fought, one thousand spectators
gazed upon the scene. The8henff

contest was at its height and demanded that it be slopped, but-
was laughed at. Weeden ami
Walker were the names of the
combatants. Walker was rendered insensible at the last ttrtliidj

in bringing Walker's body to the
City appeared at police headquarters late in Ihe evening. He says
after the fight Walker was Jaid on

and got I hem to assist him in plac

mained so up to the lime of his
death, which occurred when half
way lo Ihe city. This is one of
i lie depl uable results of aping
foreign manners and customs to1
which our people are so prone.
The prize ring is peculiarly an?
English institution and was intro-
! i.ifo this country by Eng-.
lisiinien. lis practices are unparalleled for brutality, and should
be slopped by active legislation,-
I
The Sid tan continues to have
delirium tremens and thinks he
sees Ben. Butler coming up the
back stairs with a bustle on,
naking it a crime of the highest
order, and the punishment severe
certain and immediate, thereby,-
as far as possible preventing men
who are disposed to make brutes'
o" themselves, at least regard the
leeling of the community, and
cease to outrage them by such
displays as this. My apology for'
ever alluding to the disgusting
affair, is simply to urge that steps
be taken by the State legislatures
to enact such laws as will prevent
the repetition of such disgraceful
scenes. In alluding to this propensity ot ours for the adoption
of foreign airs and nmnners, I air/
reminded of a most ludicrous mistake which our ladies made in
his behalt some twenty five years1
ago. I think it was Mrs. Cramp-
ton who came over about that
time as an English minister, and
our fashionable belies were quick
to-perceive thai Mrs. Crampton,
when she arose to meet a visitor,
had a style of apparently raising
tier heels and while balancing
on ber toes give herself one or
two pretty little shakes. Our la-
united to the conclusion that
it wars the latest agony and at once
adopted it and Jailed it Teetering.' But what was their mortifi-
cation when they learned that the
poor lady was slightly afflicted
with St. Vitus dance, and really
when she saw them at it thought
they were mocking her. A recent-
innovation, harmless but redicu-
lous, is the use of the single word
'Thanks,' when any little favor
or courtesy ^is shown. Now this
style originated with the London
Snobs, and is truly snobbish. An
English gentleman is not too laxy
to say 'Thank you, Sir, or Madam'
and this was the s'yle used by
Queen Victoria when Lieut Hart-
stein delivered to her the English'
ship, Victory, which had been
found abandoned at sea and was
brought into N Y. by one of our
national vessels. Sue wss put in
complete order by our govern--
ment, and sent to England to be
delivered to the Queen in person.
Lieut. Hartsiein who was charged
with this pleasing duty had pre-"
pared a most elaborate spread eagle international comi;y speech'
which he duly delivered. The
Queen's reply was simply, Sir, I
thank you.' I suppose the snobs
of that day thought the utterance'
of tho single word, 'thanks' would
have been all sufficient, and ia>
'tar better taste. SAXQ
