              RECOLLECTIONS OF EARLY ARTS GUILD BEGINNINGS

Northfield Arts Guild - 1959
We had just moved to Northfield.
• Gina Phoenix, wife of the Carleton Dean, had a meeting we attended with
Marilyn Carver, Fred Leighton, Casey Hero and others interested in getting an
arts group together.  Marilyn would probably remember this.   Gina and her
husband left Carleton at the end of the school year so nothing else was done
under her leadership.  (Note:  Phil Faxvog very active in the first organization,
too.)
• I and some others in town were interested in taking a studio art course and Dean
Warnholtz offered to give us a night course at his Carleton studio.  There were six
or eight of us who took advantage of this.
• Stu and I had an idea it'd be good to get the people back together who had
shown an interest in the arts and Dean offered to give further studio classes to get
the art classes continued and to help get the whole thing going.
• Carl Weight (Northfield News editor), Dean, and Stu and I met at our house and
decided to get a group of people representing the various arts together.  With so
many faculty people from the two colleges, from the public schools and from
town, we found a lot of enthusiasm.

We met with a group representing the various arts (incl. literature, music, dance,
drama and the studio arts) and decided to put together a non-profit organization,
set up legal requirements to do this, put together by-laws, etc., and elect officers
to run it and to apply for non-profit status.  To the best of our recollection, Gene
Fox, Casey Hero, Mary Lou Street, Marilyn Carver and Evie Woodruff and the
two of us were involved.  We elected Stu as the President and Ted Scott as
Treasurer.  And, I recall, Erling Larson was Secretary.  His tongue-in-cheek
minutes are worth reading, if you can find them.   (Erling was a Carleton English
prof. - wrote a book, "Waterford, Oh My Waterford.")  This was our first Board of
