We are to have many changes and improvement at Santee this next school year. We are
to have two new men teachers, Mr. Gordon
K. Hurd, just now graduated from the Massachusetts Agricultural College, comes to Santee
to be Assistant Principal and teacher of agriculture. He will teach not only class-room
agriculture but also experimental gardening,
poultry raising, anything in the agricultural
line that may be made to help in a practical
way to make our pupils examples and leaders
among their people. Mr. Hurd will also
teach blacksmithing, elementary engineering,
and will be athletic coach. Mr. and Mrs.
Hurd with their little daughter are driving all
the way from Massachusetts to Santee in a
motor truck which is loaded with their worldly possessions.
Mr. Prank Blackhoop, who was one of our
Santee students a few years ago, and who
graduated from Hampton this last spring, is
to be assistant music teacher at Santee. For
many years more of our pupils have wanted to
take piano and organ lessons than one teacher
could manage. Now we hope to be able to
take all who may apply. Now therefore Santee will offer the best opportunity of any Indian
school in the west for studying music. Mrs.
Riggs will continue as before to give her vocal
music and chorus teaching and instrumental
teaching too. Mr. Blackhoop will assist in
the piano and organ teaching. The charge
for organ teaching for the school year is $8.00
and for piano teaching $12.00, which we expect to have paid in advance. Each music pupil is required to pay $1.00 a year for the use
of the music library—music books, sheet music, etc.
Mr. Frank Blackhoop will also teach the
Santee Band. At last we will have a band Master ! That will be gloi'ious ! Mr. Blackhoop
has been the leader of the Hampton band.
So we rejoice very much in having a real
band leader. There will be no charge for
the band instruction. Any of the older
