Constantinople has walls of solid
hewn stone, fifty to sixty feet in height,
and, in some places, fourteen feet thick.
But on the side along the Marmora sea,
and on that along the harbor of the
Golden Horn, the wall is single; that
is, there is but one wall, while on the
land side, the whole distance across
from water to water, is protected by a
triple line of fortification. Thus, an
enemy approaching the city from the
land side would see before him, first, a
deep moat or fosse, of such width as to
necessitate enormous labor to fill it up,
and beyond that three walls, each one
higher than that in front of it, and the
whole crowned with strong; towers or
forts. The picture above shows a part
of the highest wall (innermost), the
second and. third being in ruins at that
point. Between the two towers the
reader will observe the famous Kerko-
porta (oaken grate, from Latin quer-
cus, oak). This curious old gate is
now walled up as it appears in the
cut, but was in use prior to 1453.
