PIERZ, MORRISON COUNTY, MINNESOTA, SEPTEMBER 16, 1909.
STATE WILL
SURVEY LAKE
Steps to secure a through
hydrographic survev of Mille
Lacs lake, to help determine
its availability as a water supply, are being- taken by Dr.
H. M. Bracken, secretary of
the state board of heal h. Dr.
Bracken will confer Monday
with Robert Follansbee. chief
of the detachment from the
federal hvdrographic survey,
now at work in Minnesota in
connection with the state
drainage commission.
Dr. Bracken's idea is to get
the survey work directed to
Mille Lacs basin as soon as
possible, to help in determining the question of the
Minneapolis water supply.
The survey will be similar
to that made for Minnetonka
several years ago by government engineers. It will show
the depth of the lake at a great
number of points, the extent
of the watershed and the volume of rainfall, the springs
that feed the lake and the
volume of the outflow. Dr.
Bracken thinks a survey
should be taken before anv
definite steps are taken to
solve the Minneapolis proposition.
The state board of health
claims general supervision
over the question of water
supply for the cities, under
Section 2,147 of the revised
laws, which forbids the pullu-
tion of waters utilized for
domestic use, and savs:
"The state board of health
shall have generl change of all
springs, Wells, ponds and
streams so used, and shall
take all necess-arv and
per steps to preserve the
same from such pollution as
may fndai fer the public
health."
The hvdrographic survey
is being done jointly by the
state and federal government*. Feo. A. Ralph, state
drainage engineer, is connected with it, though government engineers are doing
the work. The government
and the state each pay hall
the expense. — Minneapolis
