•JS. Trip to the Saulc Valley ln 185 S'.
BY THE AUTHOB.
By noon we were once more on the road,
and a.little before sunset arrived opposite St.
Clorid, whieh is situated upon the west bank
ofthe Mississippi. Crossing upon the ferryboat we were landed in "lower town," near
the store at''that-time kept by Stephen
Miller, who has since become widely
known as Colonel of the First Minnesota, and
more recently as Governor of the State.
The Stearns House, also in lower town, was
af that time the finest building tri* St. Cloud.
The site was well cnosen, commanding as it
does, beautiful views in every direction. It
ig Situated upon the immediate bank ofthe
river, which here rises precipitously to the
height of nearly one hundred feet. Looking
sonthwafdthe view Is seen but for a short
distance below town but its serpentine course
may be followed for miles as indicated by the
20

bluffS, whieHC^alllike; hold it to its course!
-; From the Stearns House to " upper town"
was about half a mile in- distance This was
then, as Jnow, the business• centre, aiicl the
Central House, was US principal hotel ahd'is
such at the. present tiine.- -.
Mrs..Swlsshelm *tE»! editress and proprietress ofthe only newspaper published west
of Minneapolis, i. e„ upon the same side of
the river. • The "_Stv Cloud Democrat"', was,
evenat'that early day, well known throughout the East and West as a notoriously spicy
little sheet, and no doubt was instrumental
in making known to the people of "furren
parfs" the'name and location of fair St Cloud.
But, unfortunately, the spice got mixed with
pojyitics, and a select, .fe^w of the rising and
aspiring politicians .of the time deeming it
encumbent upon $Stem to analyze the "compound" so asN to" preserye the ballotriruall its
native purity; ete^-concluded th'attodo this
it was, of course, necessary to separate it from
the chaff. Well, during the investigation,
someone thoughtlessly (?) upset the spine,
politics and al1, into the bosom ofthe Father
of Waters, He received the- whole-compound
with open ajrsns.- and an audible chuckle,
while smiles rlppledlip and cheek. Of course
for a few weeks there was no "Democrat," but
! soon, phoenix like. It arose from the ashes,
102 j ai^d tiie spice, whish had been carefully bot
tled, was fermented to such a degree that nothing of the cork and bottle order could have
retained it another day. Notwithstanding
the removal of the cork, the fermentation continued unabated, and tbe supply was very
generally conceded to be Inexhaustible.
Leaving St. Cloud .upon the Red River trail
we passed over a beautiful level prairie,
jwhl'cli caused me to think of the table" lands
I had heard about, so uniform was i ts surface.
Some three miles out we forded tbe Sauk
River; so, I take it, we must now be in, or
adjacent to, the Sauk Valley, of which I had
dreamed : time and again. Welt, thisthen
may be regarded as the threshold'to this
beautiful valley, and now that we are safely
Inside, we will, examine the furniture and
fixlns'" generally. The river is shaded by
large trees, arid the pure limpid waters go
murmuring on over a firm, gravelly bed. A
ffarm has been opened Just at the crossing by
a French Canadian. He calls this his "claim,"
and thinks this a very fine oountry, indeed.
Some'six miles farther on, through small
prairies bordered by dense masses of timber,
and we are in the town of St. Joseph, which
la situated upon a beautiful, prairie encompassed on all sides hy forests. There is a
Catholic church and convent here. In a
small log building about 12x14, John H. Linneman, the now wealthy and Influential
merchant, might have been seen dealing
from his small stock of merchandise, goods
to the few settlers who were then his neighbors.
On we go some ten miles further and Cold
Springs City is reached. It lies in a dell on
the borders of a small, but charming prairie.
A stream of the pnrest water flows through
the town, which conslstecLof the Cold Spring
House and stable, and one or two private
residences. There Is something Cozy, cool
and refreshing in this grotto-like retreat,
shut ih-by forest trees on all sides. The Sauk
River at this point affords a splendid water
power, and at that time, 1858, was partially
improved. Our road from this town wends
over a high wooded hill, from the base of
which on the side furthest from the embryo
city, a grand view is obtained of diversified
scenery. The general character of the country is level, and Is dotted over with groves
and clumps of trees, and small prairies inter- .
vening combine to form a charming landscape. Journeying on through this parklike scenery we, after traveling some four
miles, find ourselves in "Richmond, where
we again encounter the Saiik River. Crossing to the opposite shore npon a ferry-boat,
we immediately go into camp. To-morrow I
oh, joy! what sights we shall see! for we are
going to cross the great prairie—forty miles
of prairie! Let's shut our eyes and think
about it, sweet friends. To-morrow has arrived and we are early upon the trail. " Is
this the prairie, or is it oh the opposite side
of yonder knoll 7" "Wall, I reckon it Is
purty close onto it, anyhow." The knoll is
gained, and we have a full view of the grand
prairie. "And is this all 7" "All! do you
say! pray what more did yon expect to see?"
" I—that is—I—weU—I—why, this then is the
prairie, is it7* I didn't know positively
whether it was or not, that's all—ahem.
These thoughts, reflections, meditations, or
what you will, were soon dissipated by the
cry of ~"all hands to the wheels." This cry
was occasioned by one side of the wagon having settled down into the ground right on top
of a considerable elevation. A long pull, a
strong pull and a poU all together, and the
wheels are almost out, when down go the
"horses, hack slides the load. There Is no alternative tut to unload. The Wagon and
horses are soon moved to firm, solid ground,
and once-more we advance about two rods,
when the vehicle, doubtless tired out in the
last effort, concludes to' lie down and rest.
rSo, after muoh toil, we are rewarded by Coming to a softer spot, where it is also decidedly-
wet. Poor wagon.gets down upon Its knees
and begs to be excused.. The horses rear and
plunge; arid4 finally 'Settle quietly" down fo the
inevitable necessities of the case. They are
detached from the; load, and after making
many futile attempts to' reach bottom, are
safely conducted- to where they" can get footing. The load lb as to be carried across by
hand, and the wagon is "snaked" across by
means of a long rope to which the horses are
attached after being brought to the verge of
the sloughpthen all hands push aridhaul, and
twitch and jerk, until after much wallowing,
the whole establishment is put on 'tother
side. Noon arrived and we were only some
six miles from Richmond. The road Is
44 worser and wnrser " as we advance until
about six o'clock P. M. Having made about
eight miles, we conclude to lighten up by
leaving half the load upon-the prairie. Eight
o'clock and it being dark, the horses are taken from the wagon and weconclude to walk
in to Lake Henry, distant about seven miles.
Seven miles;. I -think you said, in ? Seven
leagues, I should think. Well, about eleven
o'olock we arrived at a former's' house near
Lake Henry, and oh, so tired that any place
bat that grand (?) prairie was like home. A
good-supper of excellent warm biscuit, ham,
potatoes, ooffee, fried eggs and hot coffee,
a£$ ail the fresh milk that any one
desired, was 'quite sufilcient to satisfy the
most ravenous appetite: That we were hungry you " had better believe," . and did full
justice to the bountiful repast. Our host was
a German; but he had a wife, and may have
hw yet for aught I know to the contrary, who
knew a Yankee trick.<M; two about^eookinft

had a " white" supper. _ T was
tired, and. my'belly so full, that I dreamed
the most wonderful of dreamsthat night". At
onetime I was King of the Cannibals, and I
had more victims than I could dispose of.
Again—but what has this- to do with the
Sauk Valley ? Refrestted by the night's-rest,
we.go down to the lake before? breafcfest. ft
Is a rather shallow body of water, partially
surrounded by a belt of timber to the depth
lofcnearly a-mi-let ,There are some excellent
meadows here for making, hay: After the
" matin meal" it waa'dec-ided that five of our
party'should returnfor the load, and the remaining three. would continue on to the
point for which we had started and which we
could reach by evening. The distance is
nearly twenty-fl ve miles—not much of a walk
of course—just what 1 thought. For three or
four hours it was delightful wandering over
the beautiful flower bestrewn prairie, gathering boquets and anticipating the view which
would be obtained from the next elevation,
