PINE RIVER JOURNAL
VOjlUME II NUMBBER 43
THE PINE RIVER JOURNAL, PINE RIVER, CASS COUNTY, MINNESOTA, THURSDAY, JUNE 10, 1937
SUBSCRIPTION $1.00 Per Year
HISTORY OF THE
CLASS GRADUATING
FRIDAY JUNE 11
In the Autumn of 1933, there was
assembled in the rows along the
northwest wall of the assembly, the
largest Freshman Class ever enrolled in the Pine River Hgih School.
Air. Hinshaw, the principal, acted
as our class advisor.
The high school faculty included:
Mr. Hinshaw, Miss Sageng, Miss
Oberg, Miss Miehaelson, Mr. Hainor,
and Supt. Cotterell.
An event of much importance that
fall was the Freshman Initiation party, after which we considered ourselves full fledged members of the
high school.
A new ruling was enacted whereby
we had to take five subjects instead
of the customary four.
In November, a "Mardi Gras" was
given instead of the three one-act
plays which were usually given. The
freshman class took an active part in
the affair.
When our sophomore year opened,
the size of the class had decreased
but we gained new students.
The faculty remained the same as
the previous year with the exception
of Harold Matson replacing Mr. Hainor as coach.
During our sophomore year, Miss
Oberg was our class advisor.
Van Backman, Merton Caswell, Gladys Collins, and Thelma Palmer served at the Junior -Senior Banquet.
At the beginning of the year, the
class initiated the freshmen at a
party.
A Carnival was given in which we
took part. Our class queen, Thelma
Palmer, was crowned 'Carnival Queen'
Jim Riley and Chester Martini were
members of the 1935 basketball squad.
Our Junior year started with a
slightly larger class than the previous year.
The faculty consisted of Mr. Jones,
Mr. Rosen, Mr. Matson, Mr. Henderson, Miss McCart, Miss Odin and
Supt. Haack.
Our class advisor was Mr. Rosen.
The class officers were Kenneth Hutchison, President; Van Backman, Vice
President and Mildred Wymore, Sec-
Treas.
The Junior Class Play "Lady Spitfire," was presented in February with
the following cast: Mildred Wymore,
Chester Martini, Kenneth Hutchison,
LaVerne Leef, Bernice King, Gladys
Collins, Durmont Button, Glen Leverington, Marie Knutson and Douglas
Erickson. Mr. Rosen directed the
play.
The Junior-Senior Banquet was
held at the Lake Region hotel on Saturday evening, May 9, at seven o'
clock. The color scheme was gold
and old rose, the class colors. The
Senior Motto "Tonight We Launch"
was imprinted.
The toastmaster, James Skinner, of
the Junior Class, introduced the various speakers and their topics. Corwin Jones, Junior class advisor, gave
ji talk on the motto. Mr. Henderson
gave "Ship Ahoy," and Chester Martini spoke on "Ship Sports." The
Captain's Band, Neptune's entertainers were announced by Mildred Wymore. The entire assemblage was
invited to Palestine for 'Hamburgers'
by Bernarr Rosen. The Ship's log
was read by Gertrude Siefke. Supt.
Haack gave a very interesting talk
on "Where Do We Anchor.." Gordon Johnson closed the program with
an impromptu speech.
Entertainment consisting of games
and dancing were conducted "On
Board Ship" in the High School gym,
with music furnished by an orchestra
from Brainerd.
LaVerne Leef and Winston Cadwell took part in the play "The
Cloudburst" that was entered in the
one-act play festival at Little Falls.
Juniors who were on the basket-
hall squad were Jim Riley, Chester
Martini, Durmont Button and Kenneth Hutchison.
The school closed with a picnic at
which we entertained the Seniors.
The Senior year opened with an enrollment of 37.
The faculty of the Senior High
School included Mr. Matson (.who left
us in February to be replaced by Mr.
Butler) Mr. Henderson, Mr. Jones,
Mr. Hanson, Miss Hill, Mrs. Austin
and Supt. Haack. Mr. Hanson was
chosen as our class advisor.
The class officers were as follows:
James Skinner, President; Mildred
Wyniore Secretary; James Riley
Treasurer; and Van Backman, Vice
President.
A minstrel show was given in connection with the Carnival in the fall.
Members of the Senior class who took
part were Kenneth Conley, James
Riley, James Skinner and Paul Christian.
On April 4, the class journeyed to
Brainerd, where they had their pictures taken for the annual.
The Senior Class Play "The Impatience of Job" was given May 7. The
cast included Merton Caswell, Chester
Martini, Marie Knutson, Mildred Wymore, Kenneth Conley, Bernice King,
LaVerne Leef, Kenneth King. Helen
C. Olson, Douglas Erickson and Glen
Leverington. The play was directed
by Miss Isaacson.
Chester Martini was the only Senior in the cast of the play "The
Catalog" which took part in the play
festival at Brainerd this spring.
The Seniors were entertained at a
banquet given by the Juniors at Sherwood Forest Lodge on May 29. The
decorative scheme carried out the
thought of the motto "We Strive for
Character Not for Fame." The Senior colors, blue and silver were used.
A delicious dinner of "legs of ye
fow-le" was served. It was followed
by talks by King Haack "Winning of
the Spurs;" Duke Henderson presenting the Accolade;' Chief Knight,

ton. He also was first to advance
the construction of the Erie Canal
and as early as 1816 put forward a

Next Sunday the local baseballers
will meet the fast Hackensack aggregation on the new diamond at the
fair grounds. Hackensack won the
championship in the county league
last year and are reported as having
a very good lineup again this year,
which should make Sunday's game
a very interesting one. The local
boys are getting their team whipped
into-shape and are showing some real
action under the guidance of coach
Biever.
The new grandstand which was
completed last year will add greatly
to the comfort of spectators.
The game will start at 2:30 sharp,
and according to the management
there will be no delay. Admission
will be 10c and 25c.

GRACE MOORE IN
NEW PICTURE AT
MARLOW SUNDAY
On Sunday, Monday and Tuesday,
the Marlow theatre will present
"When You're in Love," which, in
the opinion of those who have already seen it, is the greatest film entertainment, aside from 'Lost Horizon'
ever produced by Columbia.
Because it represents a new Grace
Moore, a Grace Moore you've never
known before—the glamorous, amorous heroine of the gayest picture in
years. A delirious darling who bought
a husband in a Mexican jail and wooed him with 'Minnie the Moocher'—
and won him in a carousing climax
you'll be cheering for months. Don't
miss this great picture.

OFFICERS SAVE
PILLAGER MAN IN
SUICIDE ATTEMPT
His attempt at what Cass county
officers described as suicide, abruptly
ended when Sheriff Merry and Tony
Larson pulled him from his car as
he lapsed into unconsiousness of asphyxiation, Murray McNair, 50, former cashier of the Pillager bank. He
was taken to St Josephs hospital.
The former banker, who escaped
from the state hospital at Hastings
last September, was found in his
car near his cottage on Sylvan lake
in Cass county, about 1 a. m. Monday, by the Sheriff after an all day
hunt precipitated by a report received by Merry from St Paul, "that McNair was' on his way toPillager to
kill his family."
Merry and Larson detecting the
attempt on his life by noticing a hose
strung from the exhaust pipe around
into the right door of the coupe, pulled the unconsious McNair from the
car and rushed him to the hospital.
At the hospital he was given respiratory treatments and other medical attention. Physicians said he would
recover.
Sheriff Merry stated that as soon
as he had recovered sufficiently he
would be returned to the Hastings
state hospital.
McNair is married and his wife and
children live in Pillager. ..
