Johnnies
Hosts for I.R.C.
"We found a home at St.
John's." This was the consensus
of the hosts of the Upper Mississippi Valley Regional International Relations Club Conference
at St. John's University, at Col-
legeville, Minnesota, to which
R. J. C. sent the following representatives: Donna Mathison, Joyce
Paulsen, Harry Wernecke, and
Katie Brown. John Streiff acted
as chairman for the roundtable
discussion on "Nationalism in the
Asiatic World." Mr. Bateman
was faculty adviser. He actively
participated in the opening plenary session entitled, "What Is Nationalism?" He was one of the
six that was chosen from faculty
delegation members to introduce
the main subject of the convention and to formulate a background as the basis for the round-
table dsicussions.
The main speaker of the convention was Mr. Ralph Lapp, a
nuclear physicist, who spoke on
"Must We Hide?"
Students who attended the
convention were indeed fortunate
to have many foreign exchange
students actively participating.
These students were not experts
representing their country, but
they did offer valuable insight
into matters the importance of
which only they could realize.
The definition of Nationalism was
much discussed and it was found
to have many different connotations. The definition, "A feeling
which unites a nation in a common political course of action"
was established.
To entertain the visiting delegates the "Johnnies" offered a
very talented Variety Show which
had previously been staged at
their homecoming dance. Their
program was highlighted by a
Negro tenor who formerly sang
with the "Melody Men" at Madison Square Garden in New York
City.

the faculty as well as the facilities of the school. It will consist
of a program followed by a number of tours of the school for the
benefit of the parents. These tours
are tb be conducted by students
of the Pep Club.

Brown, Donna Mathison, John

Teachers Convene
Did you enjoy those extra
hours of sleep on that long weekend we had? Well maybe you
would be interested in just what
our teachers were doing while we
were sleeping. Thursday, October 18, all of the southeastern
Minnesota teachers convened in
Albert Lea. Here they heard discussions by prominent people in
Education, including Dr. Al J.
Stoddard, superintendent of Los
Angeles public schools.
On Fridafy. several of the J. C.
instructors visited the University of
Minnesota in order to check on
any new qualifications or requirements for each department. Also
the-/ attended the various classes
in which the/ were interested.

Dental Assistants
Begin Course
Classes planned . to prepare
persons for certification as qualified dental assistants began on
October 22nd in the Evening
Community College, with Dr. Ric-
camae Williams filling the double
position of coordinator and instructor.
The course, which has been
built upon a plan suggested by
the American Dental Assistants'
Association, _will require a sum
total of 104 hours of lecture and
laboratory work. Some of the
classes planned are dental office
management, dental ethics, chair
assisting, dental anatomy and
dental pathology, sterilization and
bacteriology, dental roentgenology, dental terminology, and laboratory technique. Upon completion of the course and two years
of practical experience in a dentist's office, a person may take
the State Board examination and
become a qualified dental assistant.
Although the course was planned for girls employed in dental
offices, anyone interested in becoming a qualified dental assistant may join the class. The deadline for late enrollments is November 5th. Further information
may be obtained in Room 111,
Coffman Building.
Patricia Blethen, an 18-year-
old Junior College student, who
graduated from R. H. S. in June,
is "Miss Rochester" for the coming year. Pat, a native of the
city, was introduced for the first
time at the Greater Rochester dinner. She was selected for the
title by the Rochester Press-Radio
association, which began sponsoring the competition a year ago.
Pat will represent Rochester at
various functions during the coming year,' including the Minneapolis Aquatennial, the St. Paul Winter Carnival, and many local
events.
Pat, now a freshman at R. J.
C, is taking a pre-nursing course
and plans to go on to the University of Minnesota to earn a bachelor of science degree in nursing.
She is very interested in extracurricular activities, being the
women's page editodr of the Jaysee Echo, and a member of the
school choir, Pep Club, and Rajesters. She also is an accomplished piano player.
J.C. Students
Get in Swim
R. J. C. had its first Splash
Party on October 4 at 7:30 p.m.
which proved to be a very entertaining evening for all those who
participated.
The events that were provided
were: swimming, dancing, and
card games in the north gym, and
volleyball in the south gym of
Coffman. The volleyball and
swimming were the more successful activities, since dancing didn't
seem to appeal to the students
who attended. About forty students came to the party, af which
Mr. Rockenbach and Mr. Davis
were chaperones. Don Benson
was the student in charge of the
party. Don says more students
should come to these parties, because everyone has a swell time!
