As we come to the close of this school year, we rem-
wifh satisfaction at the knowledge attained, the
leadership demonstrated, and the good fellowship enjoyed
by the students and faculty at R. J. C. Because of our
varied college relationships, we all have gained a clearer
insight into the problems of daily living.
The many accomplishments achieved during the year
have been proportionate to the earnest cooperation of
the students, the sincere efforts of the faculty, administration, and Board of Educaion, and the fine support of
the citizens of Rochester.
Congratulations and best wishes to the graduates of
1954; and to those students who will be returning next
fall, let us look forward to a year of new opportunities,
new friends, and new experiences for an even better

JC Banquet Highlights
Annual Honor Banquet
On Wednesday evening, May 25, the annual Spring Banquet
was held in the Central Cafeteria. The banquet which is the culmination of the year's activities and the last opportunity for the student
body to meet as a whole group, had as its theme "Springtime and
Music," and this theme was carried out in the decorations and in the
various posters for the banquet. The first event of the evening was
the announcement of the winners of the poster contest which was held
for the banquet. These winners were announced by Wayne Webb,
master of ceremonies. First prize, five dollars, went to Charles Martin, for his poster depicting "Moonlight and Roses," the second prize
of three dollars was won by Perry Campbell for his poster "April
Showers," and the third prize of one dollar went to Tom Erickson
for bis poster, "Moonlight Serenade."
The banquet was then begun in the traditional manner with the
candle lighting ceremony. Dave Sperling lighted the candle of speaker Elizabeth LaPlante, who in turn lighted the candles of the other
candle lighters. Participating in the ceremony were: Sandra Harding, Arlene McCue, Lillian Von Osten, Margaret Lee, Idanna Kuehn,
Sharon Fountain, and Mary Jane Huntsinger.
Dinner music for the banquet was provided by the Rochester High
School String Quartette. The first event of the evening's progiam
after dinner was a message by Dean Charles Hill. Dean Hill commented on the responsibility, friendliness, and co-operation of the students of RJC, and on the fact that the academic work and extra cur-
ricular activities of the college are so closely tied together.
Next on the program was the passing of the student council
gavel from Dave Sperling, 1953-54 president, to Don Kruse, next
year's president. Dave thanked the members of this year's council
for the fine job they had done throughout the year, and then gave
the gavel to Don for use at next year's council meetings.
The next item on the program was the presentation of awards.
The winners of these awards had been kept a secret until the banquet
presentation. First awards to be presented were the "Golden R's."
These awards are presented at the close of each year to the "man
and woman who have, in the judgement of the faculty, rendered
praiseworthy service to the College in any activities which are beneficial to the best interests and representative of the ideals of the institution." Presenting the women's "Golden R" was Miss Marie Matt,
and this award went to Sue Rye. Sue has been active in many phases
of JC life during her two years here, on the student council, as Gamma Rho president, as Rajuco editor for 1954, and in the chorus. Mr.
Karl Dubbert presented the "Golden R" for men, and this award
went to Dave Sperling. Among Dave's many activities at RJC are
those of student council president, 1954, freshman class officer in 1953,
co-captain of the basketball team both years, and member of the
tennis team.
Dave Dunn, president of the freshman class, next presented the
Booster Cup award. This award is given each year to an outstanding student and booster of RJC. Dave gave a bit of the history of
the cup and mentioned that this presentation marked the 30th year
that the Booster Cup award had been given. Winner of this award
was Dave Sperling, a double award winner for the evening.
The next award to be presented was the American Legion Award,
and this was presented by Mr. Charles Singley to Donald Riess. Don,
who for the past two years has been business manager of the Echo,
has worked his own way through RJC, and has also been active in
