Message From The Dean
Freshman Week Orients
Students On College Life
Freshman Orientation Week—August 30 through September 3—
is an introduction to higher learning for the Rochester Junior College
freshmen. It is a program designed to acquaint the incoming students
with college life and study habits, and best of all—their fellow students. S ihriSfejjj
Each day of Orientation Week except Friday, began with a convocation, or a mass meeting of the entire freshman class. This helped
the students get acquainted with the faculty, the Student Council and
committees, clubs, publications, music, dramatics, sports, scholarships
and awards, and miscellaneous school functions and privileges.
Following the morning convocations, 45 minute lectures on six
different sbujects were given, interspersed with coke breaks, social
periods, and time to purchase books. The entire class was divided
into four groups identified by colors—blue, green, red and yellow.
Each of the six lectures: How to Study, Library, Reading Speed, Note-
making, Budget of Time, and
Reading Comprehension, were
given four times—once to each
color group.
At the beginning of this new fall term we would remind
ourselves that a college exists only for the students, and without the students there would be no college.
Rochester Junior College must be evaluated in the terms of
what it does for its student body. Students in turn need to
grasp a realization of the vast opportunities which are available
to them through a college education, as in the words of Wood-
row Wilson, "You cannot educate a man; he must do thai for
himself."
What has been accomplished here in the past has been
made possible through the cooperation and loyalty of our students and faculty, supported by the Board of Education and
the citizens of Rochester.
To you freshmen and returning sophomores, we extend our
sincere welcome and best wishes for a most successful school
year at R. J. C.
CHARLES E. HILL.

State J. C.'s
To Seek Grant
Rochester Junior College is one
of nine state junior colleges that
will seek a grant of $225,000
from the 1955 legislature, the coordinating committee on education decided at a meeting in St.
Paul yesterday.
Under the plan, the money
would come from the state general revenue fund and be ap-

Also in the morning, programs
were periods labeled "activities,"
at which time some of the extracurricular activities were explained to allow for better understanding of the extra-curricular
offerings. It included four council appointed committees, (social,
convocation, Merry - Go - Round,
and poster), IRC, the Secretarial
Club, the Science Club, and FTA.
Others were included in the general convocation.
For another social event, on
Tuesday, the annual Merry-Go-
Round luncheon was held to acquaint students with the club
rooms. The entire freshman class
got a free meal at the college
lunch and recreation center,
which is operated for the JC students by the YWCA.
Monday through Thursday afternoons were filled with appointments for freshman registration, after which purchases of
books could be made.
Thursday afternoon, starting at
4:30, the Freshman Picnic at Slat-
terly Park will be held. This is
the ilast freshman get-to-gether
before the veteran sophomores
once more occupy the halls,
