Most of the students at Junior
College take it for granted that
they will get a copy of the Echo
every two weeks, fresh and newsy
in their mailboxes. The arrival of
the Rajuco is a highlight of the
spring quarter.
No doubt, if you were asked
who makes the publications possible, you would answer, 'the
editors," or "the reporters," or
the "artists," or . . . And, you
would be partly right. But, at
the bottom of the staff column
in the paper, are the words "faculty adviser . . . Miss Matt." And,
believe us, Webster never included all the duties of advisers
that Miss Matt takes on.
She organizes, prods, holds
meetings, and, incidentally, offers
advice. She holds our journalistic, standards high; she strives, not
just for passable and mediocre
publications, but for welcome and
superior ones.
And all this takes time . . .
and work . . . and energy; time
taken from an already busy
schedule; work in her spare time;
energy to fulfill this task plus
classes. She suffers along with
the Rajuco section editors,
breathes a sigh of relief along
with the rest of the staff when
it is completed. She spends long
hours every other week on layouts for the Echo, and checks and

At the recent National Student
Association convention held in
Duluth, Rochester Junior College
was represented by Jean Jacob-
son, Frannie Washburn and Jim
Haueter, members of the student
council. Austin's delegates were
Kathy Bartlett, John Holgate and
Dave Reuter.
The representatives attended
many sessions to discuss the problems of Minnesota JCs. The lectures were on such subjects as
Travel, Public Relations, Leadership, and Student and Teacher
Relations.
Frannie Washburn attended
the lecture on Travel. After France's report it was thought that
much thought should be put into
our affiliation with N. S. A.
John Haueter learned much
from the lectures on leadership
and hopes to apply this knowledge as president of Student
Council.
Jean Jacobson enjoyed the lecture on Public Relations. Jean
thought the lecture would be very
helpful to her.
Other subjects that were discussed Included Student Loan
Funds and State Aid.

Society Foiled
In Potlatch
The Thanksgiving convocation
was held in the Central Auditorium during the third hour on
Wednesday, November 21.
Mistress of ceremonies was
Diane Teigen. She introduced
Mr. Rockenbach, who in turn in-
trpduced our basketball team.
Following the introduction of
the team, Jayne Birsa, Marcia
Peterson, Marilyn Richey, Mary
Chafoulias, Marylyn Hovren,
Diane Teigen, and Rosemary
Kranz gave a skit and song in
which they characterized the
players.
The cheerleaders led us in a
few cheers, and to the accompaniment of Mr. Dubbert's band we
sang the school song.
Mr. Bateman appeared with a
huge cigar and introduced Louis
Walhen, who gave us a description of and the reason for a
potlatch. It seems two tribes see
which one can shame the other
by the giving of gifts. The tribe
giving the most gifts is the winner.
Roger Nelson, representing the
"Society," challenged ail on-
comers. Mr. Walton, whooping
to the stage, accepted the challenge and the procession of food
bearers began.
When all were again seated
it was plainly seen that the on-
comers had triumphed. Mr. Walton, sporting a paper feather,
bowed in acknowledgement.
Leif Erickson and his crew
transported the cans of food to
the Salvation Army.
Social Committee
Plans for Winter
The Winter Social committee
has been chosen by the student
council. This committee, in charge
of all social events for one quarter, includes the following students: Augie Schleicher, chairman, Jayne Birsa, Esther Swear-
ingen, Jim Lang, Margaret Gor-
den, Sue Vanberg, Don Doldon,
Roger Ormand, Warren Moberg,
Helen Lawler, and Larry Collins.
The Social Committee has a
great job ahead of it in planning the swim-gyms, and the important function of winter quar-
