State Bill Provides $200
Per Student Equivalent
On the evening of Wednesday, April 24, the long discussed
Junior College State Aid Bill was passed. The bill was put through
for $200.00 aid per student by the Senate and House of Representatives, with an understanding that the money was to come from the
general tax fund instead of the income tax dedicated to elementary
and secondary education. Our representative, Don Franke, and senator, Mr. Burdick, both were strong supporters of the bill.
Before the bill's passage, there were many problems that had
to be discussed and solved. One of these was brought in by the
fact that the various local governments supported their own junior
colleges and school districts, but were undecided about the amount
of tuition to be paid and what- should be done concerning the charge
for country students.
The final passage of the Aid
Bill settled this question. It set
c minimum tuition fee of $75 for
resident students, and $100 for
non-resident students. Additional
requirements established by the
bill stated that no new junior
college could be established within a 36 mile radius of an already
cperating college.
Tonight's Prom
One of Melody
This Friday, May 10, 1957, at
9:00 P.M., at the Country Club,
is the date of our spring formal.
The theme, "Melody in May,"
will provide a romantic atmosphere as we dance to the music
of the Star Lighters. The Country Club with its spacious porches
and verandas will provide just
that touch to make this night
cne that you will remember.
Word has leaked out that the
Convocation and Social Committees have worked up some entertainment that should be tops.
It is absolutely top secret so you
won't find out until the dance.
Refreshments wil
punch and cookies.
Dean Charles Hill, Mayor McQuillan and Rex Gregor of Mayor's Committee pleased by news.

The -social

Richey, and Scotty Clark extend
their invitation to all of you to
come to this dance and join in
the "Melody in May."
Head of Schools to
Speak at Banquet
The spring banquet will be
held May 20, at 6:30. The main
speaker will be Dr. Moon, superintendent of schools. Awards
and scholarships will be given
then. -There will be no outside
after-dinner speakers.
One further requisite for state
aid was mentioned. Rochester
Junior College, during 1956-57,
has had a total enrollment of 371
students, including all full-time
and part-time persons. This would
mean, for example, that for full-
time equivalent of 300, RJC
could receive approximately $60,-
000 aid. Thus fhe passage of
such a bill was anxiously awaited by the students, faculty, and
local citizens.
Many students from RJC attended the actual sessions and
voiced their opinions, and were
introduced to some of the writers of the bill by Mr. Franke.
Each did his part in helping the
State Aid Bill to be passed. The
greatest amount of work accomplished by a lay person for Junior College State Aid was done
by Rex Gregor of Rochester,
a member of the Mayor's
Committee for Higher Education,
end the Chamber of Commerce,
through whose efforts many
letters on the subject were
distributed.
These are only a few of the
many persons and organizations
who deserve recognition for their
efforts.
