Christmas Convo
N. C. A. Officials
Examine R. J. C.
Several members of the North Central Association of colleges and
secondary schools visited the Rochester Junior College December 7
and 8 to determine the college's accreditation for acceptance into
the association.
The visiting members were E. T. Dunlap, president of Eastern
Oklahoma A & M College at Warburton, Oklahoma; Dr. Fred K.
Eshlelman, Dean of Henry Ford Community College at Dearborn,
Michigan; and Dr. Karl W. Meyer, Dean of Instruction at Nebraska
State Teachers' College, Wayne, Nebraska.
The members visited the J.C. classes, laboratories, student activities and library. They also had personal interviews with the students,
faculty members, administration and members of the Board of
Education.
The faculty and administrators
The Christmas convocation will
be held Friday, December 18 during the fourth hour in Coffman
Hall.
The orchestra will open the convocation with "White Christmas"
by Irving Berlin, followed by
"Christmas Festival" by Le Roy
Anderson.
The one-act play, "The Answer"
will be given with the following
cast: Steve Evans as Rocco, Pete
Ford as the Deacon, Tom McNeil
as Bart, Barb Eichendorf as De-
lores, Ivan Imm as the Fireman,
Leo Stellplug as the cabbie, Terry
Teigen as the sailor, and Chuck
Johnson as the vendor.
Following the play the choir
will sing "Osanna in Excelsis" by
Palestrina, "Lullaby My Liking" by
Hoist, with solos by Jean Burrows,
soprano; Vernon Almlie, tenor,--
and David Kirkwood and Ronald
Johnson, baritones.
The choir then will sing "Negro
Bell Carol," by James, with solos
by Eloise Mieras, soprano; and
Charles Caflish, tenor, and
"Daughter of Zion" by Handel.
The choir will also lead the students in carol singing.
The climax of the convocation
will be devoted to the Potlatch,
a five-year tradition based on the
customs of he Kwakiutal Indians
of Vancouver Island that involves
the competition of two rival chiefs
and their followers to see who
can out-give the other. For example the supporters of chief A.
would put all his possessions in
front of Chief B. In our potlatch,
Rickey Koppitz challenged Earle
Lewis, and the supporters of each
candidate will place non-perishable food in front of the candidate that they wish to lose.
Among the Kwakiutals, the chief
who lost might commit suicide, but
Dean. Hill .has. been quoted as
saying that any student who does
so will be expelled.
The food collected will go to
Christmas Anonymous.
at R.J.C. sent to the NCA a self
study report, which was started
in January and February of 1959.
The report was the first step of
the formal application made to
the association and includes all
phasts of the college's curriculum,
administration, physical plant
and achievement. Topics which
were covered are the present status of our college, close examination of the weaknesses and
strengths of our college and a
master plan of development for
the next five years.
Faculty members who served as
chairmen in making tht report are
Walter Bateman, Dean Hill, Mary
Goette, Marie Matt, Philip Kortz,
Joseph Rockenbach, Leonard
Davis, and Louise Barthelemy.
After reviewing the self study
report the executive board of the
NCA authorized the accrediting
team at its September meeting.

at the Kahler Hotel. Then they
. met in the Board of Education
