The camp shown was located between Poolesville, Maryland and Edward's Ferry on the Potomac River near the site of the Battle of Ball's Bluff, which was on October 21, 1861.

He is seated in the chair by the fireplace. Two of his children are also in the photograph. The oil painting over the fireplace is of the schooner yacht "America", painted by Dr. Forbes.
