Forest L. Pinney, one of the early settlers of the state, came to Minnesota in 1856 and located himself at Monticello and Anoka where he worked as a surveyor.
Sister St. John Fournier led the first four Sisters of St. Joseph of Carondelet to St. Paul in November 1851. They traveled up the Mississippi River on the Steamboat St. Paul from St. Louis, Missouri. About one week after their arrival the Sisters opened St. Joseph's Academy, a boarding and day school. In July 1853, the Sisters of St. Joseph opened St. Joseph's Hospital, Minnesota's first hospital.

Ernest Levine lived on a farm west of St. Peter. His interest in farming was such that it was confidently prophesied that he would become a farmer. Here he is acting the part. He became, instead, a superintendent of schools.
Dr. William Worrall Mayo is standing next to a horse and buggy with his hat in his hand. Dr. W. W. Mayo was born in England on May 31, 1819 and died in Rochester, MN on March 16, 1911.

This is a photograph of former lieutenant governor Gideon S. Ives. Ives lived in St. Peter at the time of his election to that office in 1890. He later moved to St. Paul. Ives is pictured with his granddaughter, Ruth Livingston Ives.

Jacob Dieter is photographed in his Civil War uniform. He enlisted in 1862 and served in company F of the Ninth Minnesota Regiment. His family accompanied him to Fort Ridgely, Minnesota and returned home when his unit was sent to another location. Jacob Dieter was reported missing after the battle of Guntown. He had been captured by the Confederate forces along with twenty-six other Olmsted County men. The group was transferred to Andersonville Prison. On June 22, 1864, he wrote his last letter from Andersonville Prison. He jumped off a train while being transferred to another prison, but was re-captured. He died in Salisbury Prison in 1864 at the age of thirty-eight.

Portrait photograph of Ida Cook sitting in a chair. The Cook family, headed by Rabbi Isaac Cook and his wife Ida, arrived in Duluth in the 1880s from Lithuania. They organized minyans and their home served as a welcoming center for new immigrants coming to the city. Ida Cook spearheaded the establishment of Duluth's first Hebrew school.

A woman stands in front of a microphone, while Hurbert Humphrey sits at the table next to her at a Hadassah Supply Shower luncheon. Hadassah promoted health and welfare services to Jewish women and children in Palestine. By the end of WWII, the Minneapolis chapter of Hadassah was 1900 members strong. This photo taken at the Supply Shower luncheon at the Nicollet Hotel in downtown Minneapolis. The luncheons helped collect goods such as layettes and linens to be sent to hospitals and clinics in Palestine. Minnesota dignitaries like Humphrey spoke to show their support for Palestine relief, and by extension, a Jewish homeland in Palestine.

Judge Mendow sits behind his desk at his law office. The desk had previously belonged to Governor Bob Lafollette of Wisconsin. Judge Mendow continued to practice law until the age of 102.

Jesse Codden stands holding the reins of a pony while her four younger brothers sit on its back. The Codden family of St. Paul were one of the founding families of Sons of Jacob Synagogue.

Harry Goldie had an interesting career, which included amateur boxing, coaching, and real estate development. He spearheaded the creation of the Calhoun Beach Club, and is shown here welcoming Minneapolis Mayor Hubert Humphrey to the club's opening. While the club was chartered in 1928 and building began in 1929, financing for it foundered during the Depression, and it didn't officially open until 1946. Goldie's dream for the club entailed an egalitarian social and athletic space that would welcome members regardless of race, religion or sex.

Jonathan, Judy, and David Lebedoff stand behind a display of folded paper animals. Judy holds an instruction book on how to make the paper animals. Martin and Mary Lebedoff lived on the North Side of Minneapolis. The triplets were born in April of 1938.

William Perry, with his wife, Ida (DeMars), and their children, was the son of early Mounds View Township resident, Charles Perry, who settled the land around Lake Johanna in 1849. Charles, the son of Abraham and Mary Ann Perry, emigrated to America from Switzerland with his parents in 1817 to the Selkirk Colony in Canada and then to Fort Snelling in Saint Paul. Abraham and his family were some of the first settlers in Saint Paul. William operated the Lake Johanna beach in Arden Hills for many years.
William and Ida (DeMars) Perry operated the beach facilities at Lake Johanna in present-day Arden Hills for many years. William was the son of Charles Perry, who came to the Lake Johanna area in 1849, and the grandson of Abraham Perry, one of the first settlers at Fort Snelling and Saint Paul.
Pierre Bottineau and G. A. Bracket chart the course westward for the Northern Pacific Railway in 1869. This photo also includes an Indian woman, two Indian men, and twenty-five railroad scouts. Photo of the expeditionary force was taken on the second day out.
Pastor Thomas Johnsen (1837-1906) served as the pastor of the Norseland Lutheran Church (originally known as Nicollet Lutheran Church) in Nicollet County, Minnesota from 1863 until 1906. He was a member of the Norwegian Synod. His original field was the entire area west of the Minnesota River. He served the area and established churches in sixteen counties of Minnesota.
This photograph shows the interior of the Myrum Memorial Fieldhouse on the campus of Gustavus Adolphus College in St. Peter. Superimposed onto the photograph is an image of George Myrum, after whom the building was named. It was demolished in 1984.

This photograph shows Mr. Frederic A. Donahower of St. Peter, who came to the community in the 1850s. He became a banker and eventually served as the president of the First National Bank of St. Peter.
