Opened in 1882 by the Minnesota Mining Company, Breitung pit was part of the first iron ore mine on the Vermillion Range. Ore from this pit made up the first commercial shipment of Minnesota Iron Ore out of the Agate Bay ore docks, Two Harbors, Minnesota July 31, 1884.

Pete Kraemer operating one of the electric furnaces at the Cold Spring Granite company. The furnaces were used to make steel shot for use in gang saws and the polishing line. Cold Spring Granite was the only granite company to produce its own shot.

Rolland Robert Freeman is shown in front of his Implement, Bicycle and Hardware store. The building was built by Freeman in 1892 and he sold it to a soloon operator in March of 1898. The sales promotion is 'buy a binder and recieve a bicycle for free.'
