1886-1887 Fifth Annual Catalogue was published for the Academy of Saint Benedict, St. Joseph, Minnesota. Contents include calendar, description of the institution, references and commendations, course of studies, fees, wardrobe regulations, clubs, lists of students, awards and closing program.
In addition to numerous photographs and some written history, this large book provides information on the town of Duluth, Minnesota, in 1887, including sections on the geographic situation, the harbor, the St. Louis River and water power, churches and schools, railways, the grain market, the Board of Trade, and banking. Photographs include many birds-eye views of Duluth, Rice's Point, grain elevators, the Exchange Building, the Duluth National Bank Building, the Duluth Boat Club House, the Board of Trade Building, the Fargusson Block, the Grand Opera House, the Hotel St. Louis, the Spalding Hotel under construction, and individual homes of R.S. Munger and John P. Johnson.

Volume of Park Board Commissioners proceedings for the year 1887. This volume is a typewritten transcript, prepared under the Federal Works Progress Administration, of the handwritten meeting minutes of the Minneapolis Board of Park Commissioners. The Board changed Secretaries in this year, which prompted a review by the Committee on Finance with recommendations regarding bookkeeping, payroll, inventories and reporting. The proceedings of June 25 contain a resolution justifying and creating the post of Chief of Park Police, who would also serve as accountant and time keeper for the Superintendent of Parks. This report references "Lake Calhoun," a Minneapolis lake now known as Bde Maka Ska, the Dakota language for "White Earth Lake."

The pamphlet for the 1887-1888 school year lists Trustees, instructors, courses of study, departments, location, aims of the school, regulations, teachers, and tuition costs. The back page of the pamphlet also lists the pupils of the Primary, Preparatory, and Academic Departments of the Baldwin Seminary the previous school year, 1886-1887.

This photograph shows one of the earliest residents of Nicollet County, Charles Flandrau, who became a judge on the Minnesota Supreme Court. Flandrau led men from St. Peter to help defend New Ulm against attacks in 1862.
This photograph shows St. Peter resident Hester Woods in the photographer's studio with a document in her right hand and numerous baskets of flowers placed near her. Hester married Maurice Dean. She was graduated from St. Peter High School in 1886.
This photograph shows the well known St. Peter physician Dr. Asa W. Daniels, who had served at the Lower Sioux Agency and at Fort Ridgely prior to settling permanently in St. Peter.

This hand-written "Historical Sketch," labeled in different writing [By Newton H. Winchell], contains an incomplete account of the Minnesota Academy of Natural Sciences' 1873 founding and activities in its early years. The approximate date is 1886, as it refers to the 13 years life of the M. A. of N. S. It states that the Academy has 175 members, summarizes its museum specimens, and mentions its public lectures and a few scientific contributions. See the transcript for the full text.
