Northwestern Lutheran Theological Seminary prided itself on the close relationship fostered between faculty and students. Its relatively small size assisted in building this institutional culture. This photograph depicts ""Skip Day,"" a time for fun and recreation that included the entire seminary community. Dr. Joseph Stump and Ellis Jensen are playing a game of chess while others look on. In 1930, Northwestern (as it was more commonly known) was housed in one large building at 1018 19th Avenue North East, Minneapolis. Workcrew in front of the second addition (at Riverside and 24th) to St. Mary's Hospital. In succeeding years, up to 1991, the Sisters of St. Joseph of Carondelet continued to add buildings to provide professional services to patients and to attract doctors and nurses to its professional staff.
Students arranged on the front stairs of St. Margaret's Academy. St. Margaret's Academy (at two sites -- one in North Minneapolis and a second site (1960) in the Kenwood neighborhood) was owned and operated by the Sisters of St. Joseph of Carondelet from 1907-1974. It included a grade school from 1907-1920. It offered an excellent academic education, as well as courses in art and music, and in commercial subjects.

Published on July 14, 1913, this cartoon shows the Underwood Simmons Tariff Bill being pushed onto the U. S. Senate stage by Senator Simmons, while the audience pellets the bill with eggs and vegetables labeled "Antagonist," "Criticism," and so on. Sen. Simmons, Chairman of the Senate Finance Committee, had arranged for the controversial bill to be introduced to the Senate for debate on July 14.
