Rev. William McKinley, 1834-1918. His obituary dated January 13, 1918 [newspaper not identified], reads: "Early Methodist Divine Dies at Home in Winona. Rev. William McKinley, dean of Minnesota Methodism, active as a lecturer, author and divine in various parts of the state since 1854, died late yesterday at his home in Winona, where he has lived since his retirement from active ministry ten years ago. Dr. McKinley was 84 years old and was known prominently throughout the Northwest as an author and preacher. In the Civil War he gained his early experience as a chaplain among the Union soldiers. His first pastorate was at Hastings, where he lived as boy on a farm. Subsequently he was pastor of Hamline Methodist Episcopal church of this city, Central Park church and of First Methodist Episcopal church of Minneapolis, besides serving as district superintendent of the St. Paul district. Bell, President of the Winona Library Board. Discussion topics include the development of the State Library Commission, youth reading, Napoleon and the Louisiana Purchase, book binding, and the librarian and the farmer.

Folwell, president of the association presided over the conference. The welcome address was given by F. S. Bell, president of the Winona Library Board. Presentations included "Progress of the State Library Commission" by Clara Baldwin, "The Library in Educational Work" by Alice N. Farr, "Happenings at the Desk" by Julia Hess, "The Reading of our Youth" by Lettie M. Krafts, a discussion of Napoleon and the Louisian Purchase by By James K. Hosmer, "Bookbinding and Repair" by Otto Wolff, "Newspaper Clippings" by Evelyn Crandall Lyon, and "The Library and the Farmer" by Willet M. Hays. A list of elected officers is included. Following the association meeting, the State Library Commission hosted a meeting on the topic of travelling libraries for all interested association members.

A hand written letter from Wendell Phillips to the Young Men's Library Association, dated March 22, stating he will not be able to fulfill his speaking engagement in Winona, Minnesota scheduled for April 19, 1867. Phillips was supposed to appear as a part of the Young Men's Library Association Course of Lectures for 1867.
