Sister Hyacinth Werden, an excellent educator was the first principal at Derham Hall. In January 1905, 70 boarding students from St. Joseph's Academy, St. Paul, moved out to a developing area in the southwestern part of the city, where the new school was located. This was the official opening of the College ofSt. Catherine. In addition to the high school boarding students there were "young ladies of uncertain age who were grouped together as 'specials.' "
Two nurses and two doctors demonstrate the use of a pulmotor on a patient at St. Joseph's Hospital. The hospital was established by the SistersofSt. Josephof Carondelet during a cholera epidemic in 1853.
Three buildings at the former McNair residence (1301 Linden Ave. North) used by the SistersofSt. Josephof Carondelet as St. Margaret's Academy, a private secondary school. The school remained at this location until 1960, when a new school was built in the Kenwood area of Minneapolis.

(It had belonged to Dr. William Lick, an eye doctor charged with the murder of his wife.) Classes of music and needlework were offered here. The house also served as a residence for about 20 SistersofSt. Josephof Carondelet teaching in downtown Catholic grade schools.

St. Margaret's Academy (at two sites -- one in North Minneapolis and a second site (1960) in the Kenwood neighborhood) was owned and operated by the SistersofSt. Josephof Carondelet from 1907-1974. It included a grade school from 1907-1920. It offered an excellent academic education, as well as courses in art and music, and in commercial subjects.
Workcrew in front of the second addition (at Riverside and 24th) to St. Mary's Hospital. In succeeding years, up to 1991, the SistersofSt. Josephof Carondelet continued to add buildings to provide professional services to patients and to attract doctors and nurses to its professional staff.
The first location (1887-1890) ofSt. Mary's Hospital. Previously operated by the Sistersof Mercy, the hospital was in the former Murphy mansion, 2416 South Sixth Street. A new hospital, with later additions, was built at Riverside and 24th. The SistersofSt. Joseph owned and operated the hospital until 1991 when it was sold to the Fairview Health System.
