Bird's-eye view taken from Church Hill of Lanesboro power dam built over the Root River in 1868. It was constructed on a foundation of solid stone and anchored at each side by rock bluffs. Houses and various village buildings are seen on north side of river. Photo taken by unknown photographer and later copied by Bue.

The third volume of Randolph M. Probstfield’s personal journals, which he wrote in a ledger book. Probstfield began writing this volume in 1878, after he had settled at his farm in Oakport Township on the Red River. Probstfield mixed his accounting records with information on daily events. These accounts discuss weather, agriculture, visitors, household expenses and many other details of family life.

4. Phoenix Hotel, Lanesboro, Minnesota

Description:
The Phoenix Hotel in Lanesboro was built at the cost of $50,000 in 1870. The hotel was four stories with saloon, baggage room, and railroad ticket office. The stone used for its construction was quarried from local bluffs. Its parlors and suites were expensively furnished. It was widely advertised as both a high class hotel for the traveling public, as well as a sanitarium. The hotel housed the Bank of Lanesboro, the businesses of Hanson & Davis, and Knudson & Hobart. Its landlords were Messrs. Chase and White. The building was destroyed by fire on May 5, 1885.

The Mankatonian was a monthly magazine published by the students at the Mankato State Normal School from 1891-1913. It was published during the school year and a few summer sessions and included: summaries of school activities (sports, clubs, classes, etc.), poetry and articles on a variety of subjects, social events (dances, happenings around town, life in the dorms, etc.) and other topics of interest to the students. It also includes advertisements from many area businesses. The Mankatonian was preceded by the Student and followed by School Spirit, the school newspaper.

Irving Ellestad is pictured at homemade wireless station that he built with brother Gerhard in the basement of the family home in Lanesboro. The key and headphones were handmade. The companion station was located in the Ellestad store a half-mile away.
